BUT, as comfy as your bed is, you somehow just can't get to sleep!

As the hours fly by and your tossing and turning thinking about how awfully tired and grumpy you're going to be if you don't sleep NOW!

But you CAN'T!

Because as you lay there "wired & tired" searching Dr. Google for tips on how to get to bed, your cortisol (stress hormone) is amped up.

It should be at the lowest point at night.

But, since you've routinely pushed your body to the max on sugar, caffeine, stress, skipped meals and adrenaline, your brain is confused and frankly, pooped out!

So, if this sounds like you a couple times a week, listen up!

You can't ignore it any longer, unless you find belly fat, mood swings, painful periods, pimples and chronic pain SEXY....

You've got to get this under control.....

What Does Stress Have To Do With My Hormones?

Oh, just about everything.

If you are constantly wired, running from appointment to appointment, traveling, skipping meals, in traffic, over scheduled, with no serious down time, your brain senses clear & present danger because it's being pumped with the stress hormone called cortisol.

Ever heard of it?  It's pretty trendy!

Cortisol is the "Let's Go Kick Butt Hormone".

The more stress (that includes your coffee boosts), the more your brain signals to pump out more cortisol via your adrenal glands.

But this party between your adrenal glands and your brain was designed for short term use.....

It's a survival feedback loop medically termed HPA- axis dysregulation (Hypothalamic - Pituitary - Adrenal Dysfunction)

Say that 3 times!

It's useful, it's powerful and it keeps you alive when you're getting pumped for a fight, running away from danger, but last I checked bears lived in the woods not in Downtown.

So What’s The Big Deal?

Don't get me wrong.

You can thrive on stress for a very long time.

In fact, boss babes function on really high cortisol levels for years.

Girl's got goals to accomplish.

But, you will eventually feel the trickle down effects of high cortisol because your brain gets drained leaving you feeling like you just can't think or cope with even the simple annoyances.

High cortisol also competes with progesterone levels.

And, let me tell you, there's no competition.

Cortisol will always overpower and win.

High cortisol, low progesterone leave you in a state of estrogen dominance.  And, that's a blueprint for hormone havoc and pain.

Check the following list out.

If you're already experiencing any of these conditions or symptoms, you may already be dealing with the trickle down effects:

  • Painful, heavy, clotty periods
  • Fibroids
  • Cysts
  • Endometriosis
  • Back and pelvic pain
  • Insomnia
  • Fatigue (fatigue that doesn’t improve even after a good night’s sleep)
  • Depression / Anxiety
  • Hot flashes/ night sweats
  • Belly fat/ stubborn weight gain
  • Acne
  • Digestive complaints, especially constipation
  • Fertility challenges
  • And more…...

Check, Check, Check.... And that's how STRESS affects your body!

Take a deep breath.  Your body is awesome at repairing and restoring.

You've just got to know where to start.

Here are 7 Ways To Start Restoring Your Hormonal Health

  • Diet - Of course you've got to check what kind of fuel your running on!  Think twice about refined sugars (cupcakes, croissants, oh, the good stuff), processed foods like microwavable dinners from Trader Joes, read labels for MSG & maltodextrin laden chips and sauces, especially soy sauce.

  • Coffee - It's got to go!  It leaches precious magnesium & B-vitamins from your body.

  • Magnesium - love it, gotta have more of it.  Along with increasing your intake of leafy greens, try supplementing with 300mg buffered magnesium glycinate.

  • Increase your intake of fiber.  Add blackberries, blueberries and leafy greens such as kale and spinach to your meals or snacks.

  • Mix up your workout intensity and include regular tai chi, qigong, yoga (not hot yoga) , etc..

  • Adaptogenic herbs - Take a tincture mix of Panax Ginseng, Rhodiola, Maca, or Eleuthero.  These herbs help balance cortisol, strengthen your stress response and help eliminate that 2-4 pm slump.

  • Sleep before 11pm, if severely fatigued 10:00pm is your cut off!

  • Shut off phones and computers by 9pm.  LED light exposure prevents you from sleeping.

  • Find meaningful relationships - Some people can be toxic and consume your limited energy.

HPA axis dysregulation is the mother of all hormone imbalances, but often overlooked by conventional doctors because because it's technically not a disease.

And thank goodness it's not!

But, stress related issues are the cause of 75-90% of ALL doctors visits.

The good news is it CAN be corrected by lifestyle adjustments in diet, stress management, emotional shifts along with skilled support
.

So, if painful periods, fibroids, belly fat, mood swings, acne, insomnia, low libido, depression, or chronic fatigue ARE NOT for you, then first and foremost, find the obvious stressors in your life, remove them or find healthier ways to respond to them.
